The Houston Texans killed themselves more than the Atlanta Falcons did on Sunday. They had several opportunities to maintain a lead or take a lead and just couldn't do it. Ultimately, it came down to penalties and not taking advantage of their opportunities.
The Texans came into this game riding high off of a huge win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, where they showcased just how good they can be. This game did not turn out the same, or even close to it, for that matter. They are 2-3 through five weeks, but that isn't necessarily bad.
This game, even as a loss, is a good thing for the 2023 Texans.
Texans' loss to Falcons is kind of a good thing
The Texans are a very young team with a very young coach. This team does not have much experience in the NFL as a whole, and especially experience when it comes to winning football games. So, they will have to learn as they go. This game is exactly what that was – a learning experience.
The Texans had several opportunities to win this game. The offense actually took advantage of those opportunities, considering they were virtually non-existent the whole game. However, whenever it counted, they showed up with a big touchdown in the fourth.
The defense did not do that. They gave up big play after big play on their last drive. They have to find a way to win in those situations. They also have to find a way to take advantage of extra opportunities.
The defense did their job forcing two turnovers; however, neither time did those turnovers turn into a touchdown for the Texans. A team rarely wins the turnover battle, but it doesn't win the game. They will have to learn from that as well.
This team can be really good; however, we know they are not competing for the Super Bowl this year. This game was a great learning experience and, in a way, a reality check to show that they still have a lot to work on.
"It sucks because you lose, but a lot of positive things happened," C.J. Stroud said after the game. "We have to get better in a lot of areas."
