Texans' best shot at offensive success is Bryce Young
The Houston Texans are facing a no-brainer decision this NFL Draft.
Let's start with the fact that the Houston Texans are not on the clock at the moment. That's something that only the Chicago Bears can claim months away from the 2023 NFL Draft.
But the Texans, owners of the 2nd, 12th, and 33rd overall picks are the favorites to trade up to No. 1 if we're going by Draft capital. If they do, they'll pick the quarterback of their future in one of the most loaded QB classes in recent memory.
Almost every mock draft on the internet features four quarterbacks selected in the Top 10. But every team has their guy. And the question the Texans face is, who's theirs?
Well, according to A to Z Sports Film Room analyst James Foster, the answer is clear.
Alabama QB Bryce Young.
In his recent film breakdown of the consensus top quarterback, Foster states Bryce Young is his No. 1 overall prospect heading into the 2023 NFL Draft.
"The talent surrounding (Bryce Young), especially at the receiving position, is nowhere near the level we've come to expect from Alabama," says Foster about the Crimson Tide prospect, arguing that box score stats don't the full story about the quarterback's so-called down year.
With the Texans, Young would be immediately asked to carry a lesser roster on his back. At least until the team builds around him with key signings to take advantage of the cheap rookie contract.
In the meantime, he has what it takes to overcome a shaky offensive line.
"Bryce Young's best trait is his ability to extend plays from inside to outside the pocket," explains the host of A to Z Sports Film Room. "A lot of quarterbacks that you see that have the ability to extend plays only do that outside of the pocket (…) but Bryce Young has the ability to do it from inside the pocket."
That last part is key because it means the quarterback isn't just able to throw on the run. Instead, it reflects elite pocket awareness and a clear understanding of the structure of the offense.
"What makes Bryce Young such a great quarterback process is a combination of processing and ability to work from inside the pocket within the confines of the offense," says Foster after going overall several plays that show how special he is.

If the Texans land the No. 1 overall pick, the most likely pick is the Alabama prospect. It'd probably take some time for Young to hit his stride in the NFL, especially in the situation the team is in.
But at the end of the day, quarterback remains the most important position in the league. Houston would party if the team gets their guy and rightfully so.
