Texans veteran lineman retires following release
The latest Texans’ roster move comes with important follow-up news.
The Houston Texans released veteran center Justin Britt on Friday, reported insider Aaron Wilson from KPRC2.
Britt missed most of the 2022 season, playing in just the season opener before being placed on the non-football illness list.
Britt started 11 games at center for the Texans in 2021. Previously in his career, he worked multiple spots across the offensive line of the Seattle Seahawks in 87 games between 2014 and 2019.
Releasing Britt will open close to $3M in cap space, per Over the Cap.
But that's not the whole scope of the news. Following the release, Britt is expected to retire from the NFL, per Wilson.
The Texans will be looking to add talent to the interior offensive line this offseason and could even look to upgrade at tackle, as well. Although Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard are solid choices, the team could look for a long-term play at the position.
Having a decent offensive line will be key if the Texans want quick results for whichever quarterback they end up drafting in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Releasing Justin Britt wasn't the only move Houston made on Friday. In fact, they signed CB Kendall Sheffield, as well.
Most recently, Sheffield spent time as a member of the Dallas Cowboys practice squad. He played three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and started in 20 games while recording six pass deflections and two forced fumbles.
