Texans sign DT Shelton Rankins to a one-year deal
The Houston Texans keep adding to their defense in this year’s NFL Free Agency.
The Houston Texans have had a busy free agency period since they signed WR Robert Woods over the weekend. Most transactions have been low-key additions, though.
But that wasn't the case on Wednesday when the Texans signed a one-year deal with DT Sheldon Rankins.
Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Texans signed the experienced defender for $10.5 million.
HC DeMeco Ryans has added plenty of talent to his defense over the last few days. But Rankins could be the best one yet.
He's a game-changing DT that can line up anywhere and dictate opponents' pass protection schemes week in and week out. He finished the season as the 22nd highest-graded defensive lineman by PFF.
The Texans have also added DE Chase Winovich and DT Hassan Ridgeway to their defensive line. HC DeMeco Ryans knows how important it is to raise the depth of the position group after coaching a dominant defense in San Francisco.
The Texans still have a lot of voids throughout the roster but the team is certainly looking improved after the first few days of free agency.
Rankins has played in the NFL since 2016 when he was drafted 12th overall by the New Orleans Saints. He has 23.5 career sacks and 34 tackles for loss.
