C.J. Stroud hit the ground sprinting in the NFL in a way that no one saw coming in the NFL during his rookie season with the Houston Texans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans is a soon-to-be free agent that the Texans should be all over. Evans is a future Pro Football Hall of Fame member who has 10 straight seasons of 1,000 yards to begin his NFL career.

Greg Auman of Fox Sports floated the idea on X and it makes a ton of sense for the up-and-coming Texans to go after the huge splash move.

Evans was a star in college at Texas A&M with Johnny Manziel and was born in Galveston, Texas, which is just one hour from Houston. Going back home after a successful decade in the NFL to sign his last extended contract in the NFL is move-like stuff, though it could happen.

Stroud and Evans would pair as one of the most intriguing quarterback/wide receiver duos in the entire NFL. A team that had Nico Collins breakout for nearly 1,300 yards in 2023 will return a healthy Tank Dell in 2024. If you add in Evans, that can be the best receiver trio in the entire league.

What would it cost to get Mike Evans?

According to A to Z Sports cap experts Josh Queipo and Kyle Dediminicantanio, Evans is going to reel in a pretty lucrative deal that maxes out at three years.

“ 31-years-old, Evans won’t be able to secure a deal of more than three years, but he will be able to maximize his per-year compensation, moving into a tie with A.J. Brown for the fourth-highest APY among wide receivers.

• Franchise Tag Likelihood: Low

• 3 yrs $75.0M, $25.0M APY, $55M GTD

• Year One Cap Hit: $11.0 million.” – A to Z Sports

With Baker Mayfield throwing to him this season, Evans had 1,255 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. Another stellar season for the All-Pro talent.

Houston likely isn’t ready to throw all of their stones in one season, but they don’t have to be. You can continue to build the team while giving your young star quarterback another bonafide weapon.

With recent coaching changes on the offensive side of the ball in Tampa Bay, who knows what the future holds for their future personnel? They’ll surely want Evans back, but the question remains will he want to be there?
