When you are in a division like the AFC South, you must do everything possible to get that advantage over your biggest rivals. The Houston Texans may have done that over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Texans won the AFC South last season and did it in a dramatic fashion. They beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18, and the Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Tennessee Titans to keep Jacksonville out of the playoffs.
Of course, then the Texans went on to win a playoff game over the Cleveland Browns. No, it's time they build on that and start adding pieces to their roster.
Earlier this week, the Jaguars released defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi, which will save the Jaguars $3.5 million on the cap to use during free agency. The Texans signed Fatukasi to a one-year deal several days later, as they felt he was just too good a talent to be on the market for that short of time.
Before the official off-season started, the Texans had 29 players entering free agency. While that number has gone down due to some re-signings, like Dalton Schultz and others, the Texans still need to fill in some names on the defensive line. With Sheldon Rankins and Teair Tart in free agency now, the Texans needed a defensive tackle. So, they got one for cheap in Fatukasi.
Fatukasi is not a name many people know. He is not going to wow you or stand out in the box score. However, he is a good player who has the talent and skill to make the play the team needs at crucial times. Fatukasi has also started a ton of games in the NFL, and for the Texans to get him when he was on the Jaguars, it's key. They are capitalizing on the Jaguars potentially making a mistake.
Fatukasi was only going to save the Jaguars $3.5 million, which seems like a lot to us normal folk, but it's not really a needle mover regarding free agency and the salary cap. They could have easily kept him as, seeing how well he played for them last year. And he started 16 games. The Texans capitalized on the potential mistake as they bolstered their defensive line.
