If you had the Houston Texans facing a win-and-in situation heading into Week 18 on on your bingo card, then you may want to delve into the psychic arts or something, because it's safe to say 99.9% of people didn't see that coming.
But, that's where we're at as C.J. Stroud and co. prep for a road trip to take on the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts on, yep, you're about to read this right, Saturday night.
The NFL finally released its Week 18 schedule on the night of New Years Eve and the Texans-Colts matchup will kick off on Saturday, January 6 at 8:15 p.m. ET. It's the only game on the Saturday evening slate and ESPN/ABC will broadcast the game. Meaning, all eyes will be on the primetime matchup.
It's the first primetime game for both teams, as well, which is awfully fitting considering that both teams also have a shot at winning the AFC South. If the Jacksonville Jaguars lose to the Tennessee Titans, then the winner of this game will rule the AFCS until the 2024 season kicks off.
DeMeco Ryans has absolutely killed it in his first year as head coach
What Ryans has done in 2023 has been nothing short of incredible. Yes, he decided to pull the trigger on Stroud and it completely reversed the franchise's trajectory, but the decision to hire former San Francisco 49ers offensive pass game coordinator, Bobby Slowik, may be his best call of his inaugural year. Slowik has been the key behind Stroud's development and success. Without him, it's fair to guess how quickly the rookie QB hits the ground running.
That, along with Ryans' elite defensive mind/coaching ability, have formed the perfect nucleus that has the Texans on the brink of the postseason. And when considering the fact the team has five picks in the first four rounds of the draft and over $71 million in cap space, the future is even brighter.
But, the present still matters. And in a big way. If the Texans can pull off a Week 18 win, then Ryans will certainly be a finalist for the Coach of the Year award.
