Liam Coen has his Jacksonville Jaguars off to a 4-1 start on the season, and they are looking like one of the best teams in the AFC with wins over the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, and San Francisco 49ers. According to the Jaguars PR team, this is the fifth time in franchise history that the team has started the season 4-1.

“With tonight’s win, Jacksonville has four wins in its first five games for the fifth time in franchise history (1997, 1998, 1999, and 2007).”

Having something in common with three of the most successful seasons in franchise history is certainly something to be proud of.

It’s early, but this Jaguars team is obviously different

A few years ago, the Jaguars had the No. 1 spot in the AFC halfway through the season, then they collapsed after primetime TV losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens. They then went on to not even make the postseason. I say all that to say that this team is 4-1, but there is still so much football left to play.

However, it’s important to celebrate your success in the moment, and right now, they have something in common with three teams, and really four, that were successful. And successful for this franchise isn’t winning a Super Bowl, or even making it to the big game. That’s never happened, so successful is winning a playoff game.

In 1996, the franchise’s first season, they made it to the AFC Championship game. In 1999, they went back to the AFC Championship game. In 1998 and 2007, the Jaguars lost in the divisional round. If this team, in the first year of the new regime, does anything close to those seasons, how does that set up the next few years for this franchise? It’s huge.

Look at teams like the Houston Texans, who, in their first two years with DeMeco Ryans as the head coach, won two playoff games. That is something the Jaguars could do. There’s a lot of ball left to be played, but this team certainly feels different than the last few years.
