The Jacksonville Jaguars have now lost three consecutive games to AFC North teams, and are now 8-6 clinging to the top spot in the AFC South.
What went wrong in their latest lost to the Baltimore Ravens? These are my biggest takeaways.
1. Constant mistakes proved to be costly
The Jaguars had four drives in the first half in which they entered Baltimore territory and got a grand total of zero points for their troubles. Brandon McManus missed field goals on consecutive drives, Trevor Lawrence fumbled after getting hit by the ghost of Christmas past, and Parker Washington couldn't get out of bounds inside the 10 yard-line to get points before the half. Mental errors and missed opportunities ended up costing the Jaguars a minimum of 12 points, and a potential win.
2. The Ravens beat the Jaguars at their own game
The Jaguars entered this week second in the league in success rate against the run, and many thought the Ravens were going to have to sling the ball around EverBank Stadium to have a chance. Instead, Baltimore ran the ball 42 times for 251 yards to the tune of six yards per carry. Lamar Jackson led the way with 97 yards, while Keaton Mitchell added 73 and averaged over eight yards per carry before leaving the game with a knee injury. Stopping the run was what the Jaguars' defense has hung their hat on, as their pass defense has been poor, to say the least. It's hard to consider them any sort of true contender if their defense can be picked apart in all facets.
3. This team is not a Super Bowl contender
Regardless of whether or not the Jaguars win the AFC South, it's evident this team is still multiple steps away from being a true contender. Calvin Ridley hasn't been the game-changing No. 1 receiver Jacksonville expected him to be when they traded for the former Falcon, and the supporting cast of skill position players is subpar at best. Christian Kirk is injured, Zay Jones is not who you want to be your No. 2 receiver, and Parker Washington is an inexperienced rookie. The defense has also shown it is miles away from being that of a true contending unit, ranking 18th in total yards entering Week 15. And, as much as some may not want to admit it, Trevor Lawrence isn't there yet, either. That's not to say he never will be, but as of late, he has not looked like a guy that can put a team on his back. The last few weeks have been riddled with ugly turnovers and missed opportunities, and they've lost three consecutive games in part because of it.
