2023 has the Jacksonville Jaguars having their best season in a long time; regular season, that is. They are 8-5, and even with the last two weeks of bad play, they are still having a tremendous season by their standards.
The Jaguars have struggled mightily, though, on both sides of the ball. However, as of late, their biggest issue has been their inability to get the ball to their best playmaker, Travis Etienne, especially in the run game. The injuries on the offensive line certainly haven't helped, but it's no excuse for the run game to be as poor as it has been
They have to find a way to fix it because right now, the offense is too predictable without a run game. The deep shots aren't there, and even the intermediate stuff is struggling a bit.
Luckily, the Jaguars have a great offensive mind in Doug Pederson, who comes from the Andy Reid tree. When he was asked about how he could fix the run game, he gave a great idea.
"Well, obviously, you have to find ways to improve, possibly getting back to some of the schemes that worked earlier in the season or what helped Travis [RB Travis Etienne Jr.] break free," Pederson said to reporters on Monday.
"Obviously, the injury situation on the offensive line has affected that just a little bit, having that continuity up front. It's something that we're focused on, and even with Phil [Offensive Line Coach Phil Rauscher], just again, finding those schemes that have worked in our past and trying to tap back into that to see if we can jumpstart the run game."
The Jaguars have the third-worst yards per carry in the league at 3.6, [er NFL.com. They are a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to huge run plays of at least 20 yards, but they have no 40-yard runs. This means they can break off those big ones every now and then, but it isn't consistent.
Returning to the scheme that Pederson is talking about will only help. He had this team running well in the run game, then things started going in the wrong direction. If they want to get their offense back on track, they need something to change. This team can make a run in the playoffs, but not with the way they have been playing.
