Jaguars’ victory over 49ers in Week 4 came at an unfortunate cost for two Jacksonville defenders
Not what they want to hear ahead of a big primetime game in Week 5.
The Jacksonville Jaguars got a big 26-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers last week, moving them to 3-1 on the young 2025 season.
They will now move on to a huge home primetime matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. However, before that happens, two Jaguars defenders must take a bit of punishment for violations in Week 4.
Jaguars DT Maason Smith fined for unnecessary roughness
The NFL has fined Smith $10,124 for a blindside block under the category of unnecessary roughness. It occurred early in the second quarter during one of the biggest moments of the game, when linebacker Devin Llyod intercepted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
Smith was penalized on the play, but it didn’t matter as the Jaguars’ offense went on to drive 89 yards and score a touchdown. The league has cracked down on blindside blocks in recent years, and although Smith was just trying to make a play in the moment, he’ll unfortunately have to pay up for his fine.
Oddly enough, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was also fined on the same play for leading with his helmet on an attempted tackle on Lloyd.
Jaguars LB Dennis Gardeck fined for unnecessary roughness
Following Jacksonville’s TD drive, Gardeck tackled Skyy Moore on San Francisco’s kickoff return, and the NFL fined Gardeck $11,274 for leading with his helmet, which is also under the category of unnecessary roughness.
It didn’t have any bearing on the game, as the 49ers went on to go three-and-out on the drive. Unfortunately, it will have a bearing on Gardeck’s pocketbook. He did have a turn in a nice performance, however, recording three tackles and forcing a fumble, which led to a Jaguars touchdown.
Smith and Gardeck will learn from these incidents and quickly put them in the past as the Jaguars look to keep pace with the Indianapolis Colts for first place in the AFC South.
