Preseason week three is here- the final box to check before the 18-week-long journey that is the NFL regular season begins for the Jaguars. Here are three things to watch for in tomorrow's final preseason game:
1. Starters- Jaguars' head coach Doug Pederson is one of the strongest proponents of playing starters in the preseason. This is especially the case in week three of the preseason, as most teams want their number-one guys to get the best feel for an NFL game right before the real deal.
"I just think you practice and play just like you're getting ready for a regular season game and our starters need some time together on the field," Pederson said this week.
Building chemistry on the field this week is vitally important, as the Jaguars kick off regular season play in Indianapolis just 15 days following tomorrow's game.
2. Nathan Rourke- All signs are pointing to the Jags sticking with Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard as their number one and two guys, but if Rourke continues to play well, he could find his way on another team's roster or even back on the Jags' practice squad.
Rourke has been the golden child of media outlets everywhere this preseason. Since most overlook preseason action, it takes an underdog story like Rourke's to glamorize football games that don't actually count. Rourke has really made a name for himself in the two preseason games he's appeared in for the Jags. He's gone 19/29 for 274 yards, and two total touchdowns. With Trevor Lawrence most likely playing the entire first half on Saturday, Rourke will need to make some noise with the opportunities he'll be given in the second half, as he'll be splitting reps with Beathard.
Trevor Lawrence has nothing but good things to say about the former Canadian Football League QB.
"He's done a great job. The guy works really hard… he's had some great plays and that's what you got to do, the guy is looking to stick in the league and get a spot," Lawrence stated.
There's a place in this league for Nathan Rourke, whether or not it's on the Jaguars' roster remains to be seen.
3. Special Teams- It definitely isn't the most glorious phase of football, but it's just as important as offense and defense. If you don't believe me, ask Jags' Head Coach, Doug Pederson.
"That's the third element to our team…My message has always been, 'You may not be the starter on offense or defense, but you're a starter on special teams and you need to embrace that role, especially if you're a new rookie,'" Pederson stated.
Saturday is the last chance for special teamers to "embrace their role" and cement their place into the Jaguars' 53-man roster.
The Jaguars kick off their final preseason game tomorrow at 7 p.m. EST.
