Jaguars should go after C Conner McGovern in free agency
It could be a major concern for the Jaguars if they don’t get it fixed.
The Jaguars have some holes to fill on their offensive line now in free agency. Partly because they had some guys leave for other teams like right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who got paid by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, they need a right tackle, obviously. But they could also use another center. They have Luke Fortner, but he wasn't good at all. In fact, he allowed 32 pressures at the position last season, and constantly looked bad. According to Pro Football Focus. he finished with a PFF grade of 49.6 last season.
He also finished with a 57.5 pass-blocking grade and a 46.4 run-blocking grade. While those grades are subjective, they are charted by guys who know a little bit about football. It's safe to say the Jaguars could use an upgrade at a pretty important position.
There is one free agent at the position that would be a significant upgrade over Fortner.
Conner McGovern, the New York Jets free agent center, likely won't be returning to the jets next season. Based on all the moves they have been making, and the possible trade for Aaron Rodgers, it feels like the center position may be an afterthought at the moment.
But, that's great news for the Jaguars.
McGovern isn't a Pro Bowler, or at least he hasn't been yet and he isn't going to wow you, or look like the best at his position, but he will be a huge upgrade over what they currently have in Fortner.
McGovern allowed 24 pressures last season to a quarterback who is much worse at escaping pressure than Lawrence was in Zach Wilson. He finished with an overall grade of 69.6, a run block grade of 69.7, and a pass blocking grade of 69.5.
Fortner was a rookie last season, so the Jaguars may want to just develop him. But, if they want a new guy at the position, McGovern wouldn't be a bad pick.
