Jaguars could cut OL Ben Bartch to save cap space for free agency
The Jacksonville Jaguars need the money, and this move makes sense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars need to create some cap space before free agency officially kicks off on Wednesday, March 15. According to spotrac.com, they sit $8 million in cap space.
Around this time of the year, fans and media usually like to try and guess who will be one of the unfortunate cap casualties or guys who will be cut to save their team money.
This happens every year to every team, and sometimes guys who are well respected around the league, and franchise greats get cut. For example, the Kansas City Chiefs just cut Frank Clark, who is third all-time in postseason sacks.
The Jaguars could save $2.7 million in cap space by cutting backup offensive lineman Ben Bartch, per Over the Cap, so why wouldn't they do it?
Jacksonville has some big needs this offseason, and they won't be able to get any of those fixed if they don't have the money to do it. You can expect to see some more guys get their contracts restructured and guys getting cut. Bartch could be a guy we see get let go.
In 2022 he started five games due to players ahead of him dealing with injuries. He played just 293 offensive snaps, all at left guard. Bartch wasn't bad when he played, but he wasn't necessarily good either.
He played behind guard Tyler Shatley, who played well in 2022. He won't be starting over him, or Brandon Scherff. The only thing to do really is cut him and save the money.
This could also not happen, and the Jaguars could prioritize the depth they have at guard. But, I think it will happen. These are moves to monitor moving forward.
