Jaguars should replace Arden Key with a key free agent
The Jacksonville Jaguars should heavily explore this potential signing in free agency.
The Jacksonville Jaguars lost defensive end Arden Key after the former third-round pick signed a three-year deal with the Tennessee Titans.
The loss leaves the Jaguars with a thinner pass-rushing unit as they now have to replace 4.5 sacks and 51 QB pressures (second-most on the team).
The good news is that although many of the top free agents at the position are off the market, an experienced edge rusher just became available.
Jadeveon Clowney was released by the Cleveland Browns in a salary cap-related move. He immediately becomes one of the best free agents available.
While the former No. 1 overall pick hasn't lived up to the hype generated from an amazing career in South Carolina, he remains a productive pass rusher.
The veteran could provide starting-caliber play opposite of the Jaguars' Josh Allen.
Injuries have been an issue in Clowney's career (he hasn't played 16 games since 2017) but he played at least 12 in each of his last two seasons. For the cheap, the Jaguars can get flashes of his great talent when healthy.
"The multi-year deal he's been seeking for several offseasons may ultimately never come at this point, and he'll be a year-to-year mercenary for around $10 million annually," writes Pro Football Focus.
It's tough to argue that.
The Jaguars have little cap space to work with this offseason and have been one of the highest-spending teams in the last few years.
Targeting Clowney makes too much sense.
But they won't be the only ones interested. After all, quality edge rushers are a rarity in the NFL. Even teams that are just looking for depth will be in the mix.
Clowney has 43 career sacks to go with 90 tackles for loss and 320 total tackles. He's also forced 13 fumbles and has 23 pass deflections.
