The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted defensive end Calais Campbell earlier this month while sparking hopes among the fans for a reunion between the two parties. But that won't happen as the veteran is set to sign elsewhere.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Campbell is signing a one-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
Campbell's best seasons as an NFL player came while he was in Jacksonville and he was a huge part of the 2017 team that made the AFC Championship Game. He finished that season with All-Pro Honors and was second in Defensive Player of the Year voting after racking up 14.5 sacks during the regular season.
Campbell will be 37 years old when the NFL season starts. While he's well past his prime, he's still a productive starter. Over the last three seasons, he's got 11 sacks and has started 40 games.
After losing Arden Key in free agency, the Jaguars made sense as a potential landing spot for the veteran. But the franchise will have to look elsewhere to address one of its most pressing needs.
With Travon Walker and Josh Allen leading the charge, the Jaguars already have a strong starting point. However, adding depth remains a difficult priority to navigate as the team has little cap space to work with.
