Jaguars: Top 3 free agent at cornerback named 'key target' for team
The Jacksonville Jaguars could target a cornerback as this year’s NFL free agency period kicks off.
The Jacksonville Jaguars know they've got to surround quarterback Trevor Lawrence with solid weapons to make the most out of his rookie deal.
But it's nearly impossible to ignore the problems the defense had last year.
Despite advancing to the Divisional Round, the Jaguars finished the season as the 30th passing defense of the NFL per Football Outsiders' DVOA.
Although Jacksonville isn't expected to be a big spender in this year's free agency, cornerback help is one area in which it could be worth doing it.
That's why one suggestion from The Athletic's Mike Jones should get Jaguars fans excited.
In a recent article, the national writer put together a list of "key free-agent targets who would make sense for each of the NFL’s 32 teams."
For the Jaguars, he listed one of the best cornerbacks expected to be available in the next few days: Cameron Sutton, a six-year veteran from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Here's Jones' quick breakdown of the fit:
“With defensive back ranking high on the Jaguars’ offseason shopping list, the rising Sutton (three interceptions, 15 pass breakups last season) would be a nice get.”
Pro Football Focus ranks Sutton as the third-best free agent at cornerback and 24th overall. The 28-year-old finished the 2022 season "allowing just 411 receiving yards – the ninth fewest among cornerbacks with at least 400 coverage snaps on the season," per PFF.
Spotrac projects Sutton's deal to be at $7.6M in average value per year.
Sutton could be a solid choice for the Jaguars because he might come in at a very decent market value. Plus, it'd add significant talent to one of the Jags' weakest positions.
