The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached an agreement with Liam Coen to become their eighth head coach in franchise history, per a report from NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
This move comes just one day after Jaguars owner Shad Khan fired general manager Trent Baalke. Khan was on record saying that if any coaching candidate expressed reservations about working with Baalke, he would be willing to consider moving away from him.
That may have been the case with Coen as it was believed that he would be returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their offensive coordinator. After parting ways with Baalke, Khan met with Coen in controversial fashion as Coen did not inform the Bucs that he was that he had resumed talks with Khan until after the fact.
Coen has bounced between the NFL and college ranks over the last few years. He was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Kentucky in 2021, but left after one year to become the Los Angeles Rams' offensive coordinator. Coen then returned to Kentucky to be its offensive coordinator again after just one year with Los Angeles.
It was another one-year tenure for Coen in Kentucky, returning back to the NFL in 2024 to be the Bucs' offensive coordinator. He helped Tampa Bay finish third in overall offense, ranking in the top five of the league in passing, rushing, and points per game.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield had a career-best 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns under Coen last season. The Jags will hope he can have similar success with Trevor Lawrence, who had a major regression in 2024. Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension with Jacksonville last season.
As Coen takes over, he'll have pieces in place to work with. Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is coming off a great rookie season, and pass rushers Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker make up a nice bookend along the defensive line. If Coen can get Lawrence back on track and make some improvements in the defensive secondary, things could get turned around quickly for the Jags.
