Don't expect the Jaguars to reunite with Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey
There’s one big obstacle standing in the way of a Jaguars-Jalen Ramsey reunion
There was once a time when the Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the most feared defensive units in the league. I believe the correct term that was being thrown around during 2017 was "Sacksonville" as the team finished second in sacks with 55.
That season was one of the best we have ever seen in Jacksonville. Their defense carried them to the AFC Championship game, where they would go on to lose to Tom Brady and the Patriots.
A key part of that defense, outside of the amazing pass rush, was Jalen Ramsey on the outside. The former Florida State Seminole was one of the best cornerbacks in the league, so much so that he wanted to be paid like it, but the Jaguars didn't want to pay him what Ramsey wanted.
So, as you all know how the story goes, Ramsey was traded to the Rams for a few first-round picks. Since then Ramsey has won a Super Bowl and is still a top-three cornerback in this league per Pro Football Focus 101 rankings.
Now Ramsey could be cut or traded from the Rams, in an attempt to create cap space. With that news dropping, many Jaguars fans wanted to see a possible reunion, where Ramsey and the Jags didn't leave things on good terms.
While, yes, it would be amazing to see this team have an elite cornerback again, who also happens to be a guy that was drafted by the team, it won't happen.
Sorry to bring the bad news, but it can't happen. There is one big obstacle standing in their way, and it isn't anything that has to do with the two sides' history with each other. Instead, it's the cap situation.
The Jaguars are $12 million over the cap, and Ramsey has a cap hit of $25 million in 2023, with a base salary of $17 million per Spotrac.com. So, there is no way for it to happen. The only possible way would be for the Jaguars to make some moves by cutting players to free up space, and that just won't happen.
They would have to cut too many players, good players and valuable players, just to make it happen.
Plus, I think the Jaguars are content with who they have playing Ramsey's position at the moment. Shaquill Griffin played okay last season, not great, but good enough to be a guy you may want on your team. Darius Williams produced enough to break even with his contract details as well.
Then Tyson Campbell was one of the best rookie cornerbacks in the league and made some huge plays in the playoffs.
The Jaguars are set for the future on that side of the ball.
