Jacksonville Jaguars meet Jordan Poyer's list of free agency needs
The Jaguars can make a play for one of the NFL’s top free agents if they choose to do so
The Jacksonville Jaguars are now a team that attracts free agents. I mean, why wouldn't they be? They have it all, but a Super Bowl, which some could say will be in the near future.
And they have everything one of the bigger free agents in this upcoming class would want in a team.
Jordan Poyer, the Buffalo Bills' All-Pro safety, is set to become a free agent this year. Sure, returning to Buffalo will always be an option, as that is the city he has spent the last six years in. But, there are always other suitors.
By the way things are sounding, according to the man himself, the Jaguars would be the perfect fit in terms of everything he is looking for in a team. They fit his criteria to a "T".
"A lot of people ask me if it wasn't Buffalo, where would you go? I'd love to go to a state that doesn't take half of my money," Poyer said on his podcast. "That has nothing to do with the city or anything to do with any of that. I would love to go to a place where they don't take half of my money. Just crazy to me that's how taxes work.
"Some people will say, you're already making X amount of money where the taxes even, you know taxes play a big part in all of our lives especially you know at the level that that we play at. So if it wasn't Buffalo, be nice and warm, be nice to see the sun maybe every week or so, every other week, at least. I don't know what's gonna happen. I'd be happy to have an opportunity to play anywhere."
It sounds like taxes are a soft spot for Poyer.
Well, boy do I have the perfect place for you.
Not only does Jacksonville have all of the things he wants or needs when it comes to financial things or the weather, but they are also a team that could be competing for next year or even the season after. They are also a young team, with a great fan base.
When I think about what Poyer said about income taxes and the sun, my brain immediately goes to the state of Florida. Of all three teams that play in Florida, the Jaguars have the best cap situation.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are over the cap more than any team in football according to Spotrac.com, as they sit at $59 million over. The Dolphins are $15 million over, and the Jaguars are $12 million over. So, yeah, it wouldn't be easy, but they definitely have the easiest situation to clear space for Poyer.
The Bills are 28th in cap space as they are $18 million over the cap. The only other team that could make sense for Poyer based on his criteria and position, is the Las Vegas Raiders. But, they aren't coming off of a playoff run, almost making it to the conference championship.
Sure, Jacksonville isn't always talked about as one of the most sought-after teams in free agency, but they could be soon. Poyer could be the start of that too.
