Memorable, awkward moments during introductory press conferences seem to be a thing of the norm nowadays. The Jacksonville Jaguars experienced that firsthand with Liam Coen.
Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions, are a few more guys who have had some awkward press conference moments but have gone on to be playoff-winning head coaches, and for Sirianni, a Super Bowl-winning head coach. So, having an awkward moment during your press conference for the biggest job of your life isn't always a bad sign or means that the coach won't be successful.
Coen's Duval chant will play on Twitter endlessly, whether he wins playoff games or not. But, he doesn't really care. He hasn't really talked about the awkward moment since it happened, that is until he was asked about it at the 2025 NFL Combine.
"I'm trying to learn cadence. I'm a cadence guy, right? So you try to go through cadence all the time with quarterbacks, everyone has a different cadence, and, you know, you learn to adapt. They're passionate about it, I'm ultimately not too worried about it. Go win games and the rest will take care of itself," Coen said on Tuesday.
The moment was extremely awkward and I think every fan would agree with that. But, that doesn't change anything or any approach he's going to have with his first career head coaching gig. He's ready to be a head coach and if the Jaguars want to turn around Trevor Lawrence's still very young and fresh NFL career, Coen is the guy.
He did that with Baker Mayfield last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and that's largely what they're hoping he will do in 2025 with Lawrence, who was one of the most anticipated quarterback recruits and prospects that this sport has ever seen.
Coen doesn't need to say Duval the right way. He just needs to win football games. And, as he and new general manager James Gladstone have said a few times now, they think this team will instantly look better than they did last season.
Then again, that won't be too hard.
