They drafted a generational player — one that, granted, is generational in college football, but has the potential to be generational in the NFL, too. When you can do what Hunter can, play offense and defense, both sides at an extremely high level, you get to be labeled generational. But, the NFL is a bit different than college.
In the NFL everything is up a level, and I do mean everything — that includes the gameplanning, IQ, and the science behind it all. So, the question has been, when will the Jaguars let Hunter get on both sides? We know they wanted to get him started on the offensive side first, and then work his way to defense, but in the NFL, as a rookie at that, surely that could take a while.
“Next week," head coach Liam Coen said after rookie minicamp. "Yeah, next week. He’ll be able to get integrated next week on the defensive side of the ball. We just kind of ended up making a decision that, from yesterday to today, we wanted to be able to clean up some of the things that we may have been able to miss yesterday, get extra reps on the offensive side of the ball, and next week, he’ll start to roll on defense.”
Okay, so, surely it wouldn't take that long for a guy like Travis Hunter, who just graduated from Colorado this last week. He already has the scheme and the plays and is stiff down. In fact, there is some soft walk-through stuff that Hunter has been doing with the Jaguars defense, speciofically in some of their three-high sets.
Something tells me that Hunter will be fine getting integrated into the defense. And, the Jaguars will need him on both sides of the ball, especially in the AFC South against the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts.
