The Jacksonville Jaguars have a very difficult offseason in front of them. After a great 2022 season, which saw them win a playoff game and get ahead of schedule, they go into the 2023 offseason and underperform. Then the season comes around; they overperform initially and fall apart at the end.
This time, they cannot get the offseason wrong. Guys like general manager Trent Baalke could be out of town next season if they do. This offseason has a ton of difficult decisions in store for the Jaguars as well. They have to figure out what they will do with wide receiver Calvin Ridley and outside linebacker Josh Allen. Both can be tagged, but both could also hold out.
This offseason won't be easy or smooth like some fans expect. There will be some difficult decisions made. However, we can infer that one of those guys should be back. When new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen spoke to the media on Thursday, he spoke of Josh Allen and was asked what he thinks about him.
Without being asked about the contract situation, he dropped a few minor quotes and hints that make us believe Nielsen thinks Allen will be back.
"A lot of production, very important. When you’ve got a guy like that, you want him back and think that’s going to work out," Nielsen said during his introductory press conference.
"I’d be really excited if that works out. Really excited to work with him, heard nothing but great things. I talked to Josh, and he’s been fantastic. That’ll get worked out, get him back and get him going, hopefully get him to improve. That’s the ultimate goal; if we can just get that much better next year, what does that look like? That’s pretty exciting. That’s what we want to work towards.”
Allen just finished the 2023 season with career highs across the board, including the 17.5 sacks he had all of last year. He broke history a few times and led the defense to have some dominant showings at times. He is a player that represents the Jaguars to the fullest. He is a Jaguar, and most fans want him back, no matter how much it would cost.
It's starting to look like the chances of him being back are getting bigger.
