Everything is beginning to click for the Jaguars. They finished last season with a winning record for the first time since 2017 and the team is finally getting used to some consistency- especially on the defensive front.
"It's always good to come back to a familiar scheme," said Jaguars' safety and 2021 captain Rayshawn Jenkins. "Last year we were just getting familiar with the play calls, the coaches, but now… we know what plays to our advantage and (what) plays to our disadvantage.
Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell enters his second season at the helm of his talented defense.
"Now it's starting to be more consistent," Mike Caldwell stated in a press conference following the team's 3rd training camp practice on Friday.
Last year, the Jaguars finished 12th in team defense and only lost two defensive starters to free agency: edge rusher Arden Key and cornerback Shaquill Griffin.
Rayshawn Jenkins was pivotal to the Jaguars' defensive success last year. He forced three fumbles and picked off three passes, including a game-winning, overtime interception that he returned for a touchdown against the Cowboys in week 15. Riding that momentum, the Jags won three straight games and the division title to close out the season.
The Jaguars will certainly turn to Jenkins to lead Jacksonville's star-studded defense, highlighted by 2022 1st-overall pick Travon Walker and veteran edge rusher Josh Allen.
The Jags have an opportunity to do something great this season and there's no doubt that the defense will be a huge part of that.
