The Jacksonville Jaguars have announced they are releasing wide receiver Gabe Davis.
The Jaguars signed Davis to a three-year, $39 million contract just one year ago. Unfortunately, he made very little impact throughout the first couple months of the 2024 season, then a torn meniscus that he suffered in Week 11 cost him the rest of the year.
Davis just couldn't replicate the big play ability he displayed during the first four years of his career with the Buffalo Bills. During that span, he averaged 16.7 yards per catch and caught a total of 27 touchdowns. Last season for Jacksonville Davis recorded just 20 receptions for 239 yards and two TDs.
To be fair, the entire Jaguars' offense was out of synch last year. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence had one of the worst seasons of his career, and missed seven games with a shoulder injury. There also wasn't much of a rushing attack to take some pressure off of the passing game.
However, rookie WR Brian Thomas Jr. had a great season — catching 87 passes for 1,282 and 10 touchdowns. With him and 2025 first-round pick Travis Hunter now in the fold, Jacksonville is in good shape for the future. However, there are off the field ramifications for Davis' release, as the Jags will absorb $20.3 million in dead money since his 2025 salary was fully guaranteed.
It's a bit puzzling as to why they just wouldn't keep Davis given those financial circumstances. Whatever the reasoning is, clearly Jacksonville deemed it worthy to just move on from him entirely. Before releasing Davis, the Jags were in good shape with their salary cap at $27.12 million.
