Teams can designate up to two players as post-June 1 cuts, meaning that they are officially released on June 2, which allows the team to spread out the player's dead cap money over more time.
This often happens to veterans who are making significant money but no longer factor into the team's future plans. In the case of the Jaguars, that player is wide receiver Gabe Davis, who was designated just under one month ago. Jacksonville is set to gain $749K with his release. Here is the breakdown via Over The Cap:
"This goes down as one of the worst free agent signings of all time. Davis lasted just a year on this deal. His cap drops from $6.5 million to $5.7 million this year but the Jaguars had to pay Davis $11.5 million as a parting gift. Davis will count for $14.6 million in dead money in 2026. Davis is not under contract to any team in 2026."
Davis' release gives the Jaguars a very small amount of cap relief, but fortunately they already had plenty to make it happen. Jacksonville is a little bit over $27 million in cap space, which is a pretty comfortable spot to be in. The Jaguars signed Davis to a three-year, $39 million contract just one year ago.
In 2024 Davis recorded just 20 receptions for 239 yards and two TDs. He then suffered a torn meniscus in Week 11, which cost him the remainder of the season. A failed physical was the ultimate factor in Davis' release, which suggests that he may not be ready to play at the start of the 2025 season. Davis remains unsigned.
