Jacksonville Jaguars star QB Trevor Lawrence is up for a contract extension, but nothing is guaranteed to unfold at this time. Regardless, his job is to lead this team back to the postseason and that is the focus right now. Lawrence is heading into his fourth year in the NFL, but the team results to this point have been a roller coaster ride.
Statistically, Lawrence has struggled with turnovers and efficiency. Through his first three years in the league, he has completed 64% of his passes for 11,770 yards, 58 passing touchdowns, and 39 interceptions. In 2023 alone, Lawrence had a TD-to-int ratio of 21-to-14.
Lawrence has struggled with toeing the line between being an aggressive gunslinging playmaker and being more conservative based on the in-game situation. During his interview on NFL Network this week, Lawrence discussed his play towards the end of the season.
"I touch the football every play and have a big impact on the game. As the QB, I have to play well to win and I do not think I play my best at the end of the season to give us a shot. That is something I have to learn from."
Even without a contract extension this off-season, he is prepared to remain focused on the task at hand. Lawrence stated this during his interview on NFL Network.
"It is something I am not concerned with. Obviously, I would like to get a deal done this year or next year, whenever it gets done. I know I have a job to do regardless of whether I get this extension this year, next year, or whenever it is. I have the same job to do and it does not change."
Is Trevor Lawrence the franchise QB in Jacksonville?
Despite his ups and downs, Lawrence is the franchise QB for the Jaguars. He led them to their first playoff berth since Blake Bortles and the 2017 Jaguars team. Lawrence has shown flashes of greatness during the 2022 season and through the middle of the 2023 season.
With his combination of outstanding height, athleticism, and arm talent, Lawrence is an NFL franchise's dream at the quarterback position. Going into year three with Coach Doug Pederson, Lawrence must maintain his level of play throughout a 17-game season.
The Jaguars' front office must improve their offensive line, defensive secondary, and wide receiver groups to alleviate pressure off their leader. Lawrence is mentally locked in and prepared to improve the areas of his game that have held himself and the team back. A healthy season will surely help him return to his 2022 form.
