The first wave of free agency is in the books and there aren't a ton of surprises to talk about when it comes to the Jacksonville Jaguars. After two years of heavy spending and a limited salary cap outlook, this was expected to be a quiet year for the team.
And yet, there are several moves that resulted in winners and losers in Jacksonville. From Trevor Lawrence to Travon Walker, we have a lot to discuss.
Let's dive in!
Winners
QB Trevor Lawrence: This might be the most obvious answer of them all but it's true. The Jaguars kept Evan Engram by placing the franchise tag on him, which means the quarterback will have the same guy at tight end that caught 73 passes last year.
For context, no other Jaguars tight end had 10 catches in the season. The position is huge in Doug Pederson's offense and keeping Engram will make Lawrence's life easy. And hey! Calvin Ridley is back. More on that later.
RB: Travis Etienne's legs: The Jaguars' starting running back was one of 14 NFL players to carry the rock at least 220 times last season. It was high time the team got him some help staying fresh.
Etienne gets exactly that with the signing of D'Ernest Johnson, who was buried in the Cleveland Browns' depth chart. But Johnson has the burst to be a significant contributor as RB2. That might also lead to a more dangerous version of Travis.
OL Walker Little: With Jawaan Taylor off to Kansas City, Little gets a shot at graduating from swing tackle to starter in 2023. The team might still draft somebody to line up at right tackle but Little didn't look bad at all when filling in for Taylor and Cam Robinson last year.
He won't go down without a fight.
Losers
EDGE Travon Walker and Josh Allen: The two starting edge rushers lose Arden Key as their primary backup which means there is more on their plates, at least for now.
Key played in 41% of the defensive snaps followed by Dawuane Smoot's 38%. Smoot remains unsigned as of this writing. EDGE rusher depth is one of the biggest needs for the Jaguars.
Pass Defense: On a similar note, the Jaguars didn't do much to strengthen one of their biggest weaknesses; their pass defense. That's not a surprise as this was always supposed to be a quiet free agency period after two years of heavy spending.
The team did bring back several key contributors like Tre Herndon but last year's 30th passing defense (in DVOA) remains the team's biggest question mark.
Christian Kirk's WR1 status: I'm cheating a little bit with this one. Calvin Ridley's reinstatement will help Kirk see more favorable matchups every week. But last year, Kirk was the undisputed No. 1 receiver on offense. In 2023, Ridley will challenge Kirk for the majority of the targets. Especially if he's fully healthy.
That's the main reason why the Jaguars bet on Ridley last year. They know he has the upside to be the No. 1 guy for their offense. Kirk finished the 2022 season with a 30% share of the team's total air yards, per Next Gen Stats.
With more weapons at Trevor Lawrence's disposal, I expect that to change. Although his status as WR1 is listed as a loser, this is good news for Kirk and the entire offense.
