As all 32 NFL teams were finalizing their 53-man rosters earlier this week, rumors were swirling regarding the Jaguars putting rookie wide receiver Parker Washington on the trade block. Jaguars' general manager Trent Baalke recently shut these rumors down.
"We weren't actively shopping him… but there were several teams that reached out," Baalke stated. He followed up by saying, "It wasn't a situation we felt comfortable with."
Although Washington was relatively quiet in terms of volume this preseason, he made the most out of the opportunities he was given. He caught two passes for 31 yards and 1 touchdown:
Washington remains in a Jaguars' receiver room filled with six other pass catchers: Calvin Ridley, Zay Jones, Christian Kirk, Jamal Agnew, Tim Jones, and fellow rookie Elijah Cooks.
It goes without saying that the first three slots in the WR depth chart are filled in Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Zay Jones, but the Jaguars' talent at receiver certainly doesn't stop there.
2nd-year receiver Tim Jones, like Washington, is coming off of a stellar preseason, highlighted by a 74-yard touchdown on a silky smooth shake-and-go route:
Jones' versatility and experience in the Jaguars' offense allows him to fill in at any receiver position.
Perhaps one of the most intriguing Jaguars receivers to watch is Elijah Cooks who made the 53-man roster after signing with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent this past April. Not only did Cooks make the 53, but he was PFF's 3rd-highest graded offensive rookie this preseason.
Sure, seven receivers sounds like too many, but once you look past Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Zay Jones who fill your starting roles, and Jamal Agnew who duals as a specialist, having three young receivers to learn under those guys makes too much sense.
Elijah Cooks and Parker Washington are two of a whopping ten rookies to make the Jaguars' final roster.
The Jags are building for the future.
