2024 is shaping up to be a season to forget for not only the Jacksonville Jaguars as a whole, but also Travis Etienne.
The fourth-year running back hasn't been able to kick it into gear through the first six weeks, averaging just 38 rushing yards per game and totaling two touchdowns. Etienne also lost a fumble that played a big part in the Jaguars' Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Things have now gone from bad to worse for Etienne as he suffered a hamstring injury during Jacksonville's Week 6 loss to the Chicago Bears. Per Jaguars coach Doug Pederson, Etienne is considered "week-to-week" moving forward.
“Travis had a hamstring in the game," Pederson said on Monday. "He’s going to be week-to-week. He tweaked it on a go ball early in the game.”
Hamstring injuries can unfortunately be tricky and linger on for multiple weeks. Etienne was already battling through a hurt shoulder, which he injured in Week 4 against the Houston Texans. It would be wise for the Jaguars to give him an excessive amount of time to recover given that their season is all but over as they currently sit at 1-5.
Tank Bigsby, who actually has more rushing yards on less carries than Etienne, figures to be the next man up for Jacksonville. Bigsby doesn't offer much in terms of being a receiver, but D'Ernest Johnson could fill that role as a third-down back. As for Etienne, his name has become popular amongst trade rumors.
Trading Etienne makes sense as the Jaguars could look to clean house after this season. With Bigsby playing well, they may want to address other needs throughout their roster with the draft picks they would get in return for Etienne. Given his injury status and the trade deadline being just three weeks away, if Jacksonville does decide to move Etienne, it's possible that he's played his last game in a Jags uniform.
Despite his disappointing year, Etienne still has a lot to offer. He is in the prime of his career at just 25-years-old and has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his previous two seasons. He is a three-down back who also excels at catching the ball. It seems that a change of scenery might do well for both Etienne and the Jaguars organization.
Doug Pederson’s hot seat could reach boiling point in London based on precedent set by Jets
The parallels between Doug Pederson and Robert Saleh’s situations are impossible to ignore.
