In one of the biggest collapses in recent NFL memory, the Jacksonville Jaguars have gone from potentially being the No. 1 seed in the AFC after defeating the Texans to losing five of six down the stretch and missing the playoffs all together.
In light of the mess that was the final month and a half of the season, there's a lot of things that need addressing in the offseason. Here are my thoughts:
Trevor Lawrence Needs Help
This isn't to say that Trevor Lawrence is free of criticism. He's had his own issues this year in terms of decision-making with the ball. That said, any Jaguars fan saying he needs to go is out of their mind. He has dealt with a bad offensive line, receivers that didn't live up to expectation, and a defense that has looked lost all season in the secondary and just allowed the Titans to pound the ball down their throats. If Lawrence played like a bottom-tier quarterback and never showed flashes of being a really good quarterback, then sure, boot him out of town all you want. But he has shown that he is capable of making the special throws and putting a team on his back- he just did it a year ago. With all of the aforementioned roster issues, combined with his bum ankle and shoulder injury, what more could he have done? This falls so much more on the front office and the issues at coaching than it falls at the feet of Lawrence.
The Defense Needs Overhauled
The Jaguars have one of the worst secondaries in football. They entered Week 18 giving up the sixth most passing yards per game in the NFL. And despite being a top 10 team in terms of rushing yards allowed, they let Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears dice them up. This has been a unit full on inconsistent play all season. The Jaguars have the benefit of having a handful of really good players. Josh Allen, Foyesade Oluokun, Darious Williams, Andre Cisco, and Travon Walker are all really nice players. Everyone else on that defense needs reassessed. The secondary is asking guys like Rayshawn Jenkins, Tyson Campbell, and Tre Herndon to play above their skill level. Plus, they need to get better on the defensive line. Having their handful of good players is certainly a plus, and gives them a base to work from, but there is work to be done for Jacksonville defensively.
Trent Baalke Needs Fired
The Jaguars cannot extend Trent Baalke, The way this team went about trying to build around Trevor Lawrence has blown up in the face of the front office, and heads need to roll for how this season ended. The offensive line was bad, and led to Lawrence being hurt multiple times. They didn't shell out enough assets to deepen the receiving corps, and we just talked about all the issues defensively. This should be the end of the line for Baalke. And if it's not, that paints a picture of the organization being content with just being good enough to not be good enough.
