John Harbaugh should pay close attention to the center prospects making noise at the Senior Bowl for the 2026 NFL Draft
These center prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft are major standouts at the Senior Bowl
The New York Giants need to solidify their offensive line this year during the 2026 NFL Draft, and it could start at the Senior Bowl.
While the offensive line has improved over the last few years, it still needs work to protect Jaxson Dart effectively. One position that may need a new starter or at least competition is center due to struggles from former Day 2 pick John Michael Schmitz.
Thankfully, there are two center prospects who excelled through the first days of Senior Bowl practices. And John Harbaugh better be paying close attention to them. Those two players are Kansas State’s Sam Hecht and Miami’s James Brockermeyer.
Kansas State C Sam Hecht
Hecht has been one of my biggest winners of the week through two practices. When he’s been at center, he’s looked extremely reliable. He’s flashes quick feet with great body placement, along with a savviness to win reps.
On the play below, Hecht does a great job of regathering his feet against a much bigger rusher in Florida State’s Darrell Jackson Jr. His ability to limit forward progression from the fastest path to the quarterback is impressive.
On this team period rep, Hecht’s feet and nuanced body placement help him win this rep. He does a tremendous job of reaching and getting his head around to win.
Lastly, this play shows his ability to shut down bigger defenders. Texas Tech’s Lee Hunter was dominating everyone over the last two days. This was one of the few times someone stood up to him.
The Giants could take Hecth early on Day 3 to compete at center to potentially start in 2026. He’s absolutely worth that decision.
Miami C James Brockermeyer
Brockermeyer has been equally as steady as Hecht was in one-on-one drills. In the below play, you can see Brockermeyer quickly plant and regather to prevent himself from losing the rep. Again, being able to anchor against stronger and bigger defenders is paramount for being a great center.
Brockermeyer was one of the best centers in the country this year and a major reason why Miami’s offensive line was so good. His success with the Hurricanes can absolutely translate to the NFL with the Giants.
Ultimately, this year’s draft class offers the Giants options to increase their depth at a position that is becoming a liability. If Harbaugh wants to set the tone in year one, he needs to get more out of the center position. Drafting either of these players will help him accomplish that.
