Kansas City Chiefs could be in line to steal an NFC foe’s potentially key player after all Week 1 games have been wrapped up

The Kansas City Chiefs could end up going after Mecole Hardman, just like they have many times before.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy left Friday night’s game in Brazil against the Los Angeles Chargers with a shoulder injury.

The Week 1 loss wasn’t the only loss they took, as the second-year WR that was likely going to be the focal point of the offense with Rashee Rice out for six weeks, could now find himself out for some time. This means the Chiefs will quickly need a backup plan, as the WR room at this point is pretty much Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton. The Chiefs could be in line to hit up former Kansas City WR Mecole Hardman, as we have seen before from the dynasty.

Hardman could be the Chiefs’ veteran wide receiver with the potential absence of Worthy

There is still no clear timeline on Worthy’s injury or how severe it is, but head coach Andy Reid didn’t sound too great about the whole injury. With Worthy out and Rice out for five more weeks, the Chiefs need another body in the room. We have seen the Chiefs do it before with Hardman. After the 2022 season, he signed with the New York Jets. The Chiefs traded for him before playing the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, and Hardman went off for three touchdowns.

Then, to start 2024, Hardman stayed with the Chiefs, where he played a small role on offense and special teams. This offseason, he signed with the Green Bay Packers, but is on their practice squad. He could be elevated Sunday for their game against the Detroit Lions. But, after that, the Chiefs could look into signing him to their 53-man roster from the Packers.

They need someone who can be a playmaker and is reliable in as he knows the offense already. It wouldn’t take a week or two to get the guy in the system and learning the playbook. They need someone who has chemistry with Mahomes, and as we saw in the Super Bowl when Mahomes hit Hardman for the win, they have chemistry.

Obviously, Hardman is not coming in as a guy who will immediately be the No. 1 WR on the team if he were to be signed by Kansas City. But it’s a band-aid for the depth issue they are bound to have until things get fixed. And, it’s worked before. They could do this, or they couldn’t, but you can’t say you haven’t thought about it for the Chiefs.
