Whether they want to do that or not is a different story because the moment you do that, you have less money to spread across your roster as a whole. But some of these players are good enough to make an entire side of the ball that much better. The Raiders may do that.
Last season, the defense on paper wasn't great from a roster standpoint. There were still a ton of holes to be filled. However, they over-exceeded expectations with their play. The Raiders ended the season with a top-five defense, and it was the offense that needed work. However, the offensive issues were more from a personnel and coaching standpoint. The roster on that side of the ball is not bad, and the roster on defense could very well use some help even still.
Luckily for the Raiders, this week was huge in persuading one of the biggest potential free agents in the 2024 offseason to come and play in Las Vegas.
"The Raiders have the best facility in the league," Chiefs' Chris Jones said this week to Vinny Bonsignore. "[It is a] very first-class organization. New equipment, new facility. Much respect to the owner and the organization."
According to A to Z Sports' Free Agency Projections with the top 75 free agents, Jones' likely contract will be four years, $110 million, $27.5 million APY, and $65 million fully guaranteed. Here is what A to Z Sports had to say about Jones' free agency situation, which is weird because he could be tagged or could sign a huge deal with Kansas City:
Jones is one of the premier interior defensive linemen in the NFL right now. His 198 quarterback pressures since 2021 is second among his position group to only the incomparable Aaron Donald. With 32 sacks and 35 tackles for loss over that same timeframe Jones is bringing down passers at a faster clip than many of the league’s premier edge rushers. And Jones’ 17.6% pass rush win rate ranks 4th in the NFL this year. – A to Z Sports
If the Raiders could get Jones, that would instantly make them a top defense in the league and likely make them a legit contender in the playoffs. However, the one issue you have is the fact that he is a division rival. The money would have to be good because he is a division rival. I mean, hey, he already loves the facilities.
