Derek Carr has always been a quarterback of class, even when things didn't go his way.

At the tail end of the 2022 NFL season, the Las Vegas Raiders informed Carr that his run as the franchise's starter where done. The two sides sought to reconcile and move on via a trade, but in the end, the franchise cut bait with Carr in February.

Eventually, Carr signed with the New Orleans Saints — ending his chapter with the only franchise he's known in his NFL career. On Thursday, Carr lamented not being able to give the Raiders his best last season. He felt like he let the team down because of how he felt during the season.

“They just didn’t get my best and that drove me crazy at the end of the year because I felt so spread out in so many different ways,” Carr said during minicamp this week. “I just didn’t feel like myself and I feel bad for the (Raiders) coaches and players.”

Carr’s self-described regression in 2022 wasn’t a matter of effort or desire, he said, according to the AP. Rather, it came down to his approach to a mix of professional and personal challenges which he regrets, but from which he also grew.

He certainly hinted at some bitterness toward the organization after the Raiders decided to move on from him, at the end of last season. But he seems to have soothed those emotions since then.

Carr’s numbers were definitely down in 2022 as he threw for 3,522 yards, a modest total for him, to go with 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Meanwhile, the Raiders moved on by adding Jimmy Garoppolo, who had offseason surgery but is expected to be ready to go by training camp in late July and early August.
