If you didn't already hear – the secret is out – the Las Vegas Raiders desperately want LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, wanting him and getting him are two different things. They could trade up and grab him if the price is right, or they could take another quarterback at pick No. 13.
The Raiders would rather not do the latter but will if they have to, as they do like Michael Penix, who could be available at 13. If they cannot trade up, and Penix is available when it's their turn to draft, I most definitely see them taking the quarterback from Washington.
Penix has some great tools and attributes that the Raiders would love to have in their quarterback room. He would instantly make them a better team and make them good enough to compete in the playoffs. However, he is not quite the quarterback that Daniels is or can be. That's why Daniels is projected to be a top-three pick.
But, one new report suggests the Raiders may have a better shot at drafting him than they thought. It appears there is a chance that Daniels is not interested in going to one of the top three teams in the draft.
"I think it's a situation where Jayden Daniels has an interest in being in other places," Adam Schefter of ESPN said. "He just does. Now the question is, okay, what do the Commanders do about that? There have been many players who wanted to play elsewhere, and teams don't care. They just do what they do. Or, there is a team that wants him- i.e. if there was a coach who used to have him in college. But, they have to trade for him."
Mark Davis, the Raiders owner, has given Tom Telesco the green light to trade up for Daniels, but only if the price is right. The Raiders are not a team that will overpay for a quarterback.
It still seems that trading for Daniels is somewhat of a long shot; however, this report is certainly helpful in the idea that if you truly believe a guy can change your franchise, you need to take that shot.
