The Las Vegas Raiders made some changes just before their bye week got underway. And, they were changes that needed to happen, but it's far too late now. The Raiders are 2-7 and pretty much out of contention for the playoffs. To make it, they would have to win every single game from here on out with a brutal schedule remaining. And even then, they could still not make it.
The Raiders fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, whose scheme really wasn't great, and the play-calling wasn't helping either. They also let go of quarterback coach Rich Scangarello and offensive line coach James Cregg. Now, they have those positions, and possibly many more, to fill this offseason.
As far as interims go, they named Scott Turner as interim offensive coordinator. Joe Philbin is stepping in as offensive line coach, and they hired Norv Turner, a former Raiders head coach, to be an offensive assistant. Norv Turner is the father of Scott Turner, and the two of them will work together to try and salvage the offense.
But, as for Scott Turner, he's a bit of a mystery for a lot of casual fans and maybe even Raiders fans. But, he's not new to this. Here is everything you need to know about Scott Turner:
Everything you need to know about Raiders' Scott Turner
Before joining the Raiders, Turner was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders from 2020 to 2022. During the 2021 season, his team featured both a 1,000-yard rusher and receiver, achieving the sixth-best rushing yardage per game in the NFC at 121.2 yards. That seems to be what the Raiders want to do the most, and where they need to improve the most.
Previously, Turner was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers from 2018 to 2019, where he also took on the role of interim offensive coordinator in 2019. Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator but left so that his son could inherit the role. In his inaugural year with Carolina, the offense ranked 10th in the NFL in net yards per game at 373.3, marking the second-highest seasonal average in the team's history.
From 2014 to 2016, Scott Turner served as the quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings, and in 2013, as the wide receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns.
But, here are the most important stats, mainly because the Raiders have had an issue scoring points the last two years:
In 2020, his first season as offensive coordinator, the Washington offense scored 20.9 points per game (25th). In 2021, the Washington offense scored 19.7 points per game (T-23rd). In 2022, the Washington offense scored 18.9 points per game (24th).
This year the Raiders average just barely over 18 points per game, which is 26th in the league. Obviously, they wanted to make someone within the organization the interim offensive coordinator, but his history doesn't seem to be the thing that can fix the Raiders' biggest issue.
Only time will tell. For now, they are on a bye. When they come back, they will play the Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have a tough schedule coming up.
Las Vegas Raiders have officially run out of patience with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy
It was bound to happen.
