Jakobi Meyers being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars opens up two potential huge wins for the Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders have traded wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars before the trade deadline.
The Las Vegas Raiders never showed their hand on whether they would give Jakobi Meyers the contract extension he wanted or if they would trade him at the trade deadline. Now, they have, as they just sent him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick, with the details of those picks to be revealed later.
This is a huge win for the Raiders, as they get a great return for Meyers. Initially, most assumed the best offer Las Vegas would get for Meyers was a sixth since he’s on an expiring contract. This says the Jaguars had to overpay for other serious inquirers, and they’re overpaying because they believe they can get the Georgia native to re-sign.
Trevor Lawrence gains another solid wide receiver option after Travis Hunter and Brian Thomas Jr. got hurt, as he utilized a few players from the practice squad in the last game.
The Raiders get a big win, or two, too.
Raiders win the trade with the Jaguars in two ways
Like we said, the compensation for an expiring contract is enough to call it a win. But the Raiders get a fourth-rounder, and the opportunity for their second-round guy, Jack Bech, to get better. Now, he will have more opportunities to play, which means more opportunities to develop that he didn’t have before.
He hasn’t been playing much because he is the same type of receiver as Meyers. Both are possession guys who get open. They beat zone by finding soft spots in shallow gaps, rather than beating zone coverage over the top. When Meyers, who had the lowest drop rate of any receiver last season, is playing, it’s nearly impossible for Bech to get on the field.
There is an idea that the Raiders drafted Bech to replace Meyers. They loved Meyers and what he brought, but it was time to replace him with someone much cheaper and with higher potential. This opens up the idea of Tre Tucker becoming the team’s official WR1 after a stellar start to the season.
The Jaguars are acquiring the ultimate professional in Meyers, a player who demanded a trade but never held out after not receiving his contract. He always stayed and played for his teammates and for the shield he deeply respected. This is one trade that John Spytek has won, while they will miss Meyers and his professionalism.
