Las Vegas Raiders' quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has received a two-game suspension from the NFL for violating the NFL's Performance Enhancing Substances Policy, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He is expected to be released by the Raiders.

"The policy violation is related to him using a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption," Schefter wrote.

Garoppolo will still be allowed to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, but will miss the first two games of the regular season. The suspension, however, should void his $11.25 million salary guarantee for 2024.

The Raiders were already expected to cut Garoppolo after a difficult first season with the team. Without the leadership group that brought the quarterback in, head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, it was just a matter of time. The suspension and the guarantee void make everything clearer (and easier) for the team.

Contract

When Jimmy Garoppolo signed his free agent deal with the Raiders last offseason, it included two types of guarantees for the 2024 season.

First, it has an $11.25 million base salary that was initially for injury only, becoming fully guaranteed on March 18. He was expected to be released before that date anyway.

Additionally, the deal had an $11.25 million fully guaranteed roster bonus. However, the guarantee might void with the suspension, and Garoppolo won't receive that money when released.

Originally, Jimmy Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders. It will end up being a one-year, $23.35 million deal.

Garoppolo will have to find a new team to play for in 2024, and he won't be allowed to play the first two weeks of the season — he will also lose the paycheck for these two games.

Performance

Jimmy Garoppolo was signed because he is close to former Raiders' head coach Josh McDaniels, who had been his offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots. But Garoppolo suffered with injuries and poor performance.

The quarterback had his worst NFL season, with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions, a 77.7 passer rating. He started only six games and lost the starting job to rookie Aidan O'Connell, because the Raiders wanted to avoid an injury guarantee triggering.

In the end, the Raiders won't have to pay Garoppolo anything else.
