UFC president Dana White tried to throw the Las Vegas Raiders a bone.
But then Raiders coach Jon Gruden wouldn't let it happen.
White during UFC 278 on Saturday night, on ESPN and ESPN+, said that he helped broker a deal for quarterback Tom Brady to play for the Raiders when Brady was a free agent quarterback in 2020, but then-Raiders coach Jon Gruden nullified the deal at the last minute, according to ESPN's Michael Rothstein.
"I worked to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders," White said. "It was almost a done deal. And at the last minute, Gruden blew the deal up and said that he didn't want him and all hell broke loose, man. It was crazy.
"And Brady was already looking at houses. It wasn't said yet that Gronk was going to be coming. So Las Vegas would have had Brady and Gronk the year that the Bucs won the Super Bowl except Gruden blew the deal up."
White also added that "there's so much story that goes with this behind the scenes."
It's fitting that Gruden put a stop to the Raiders' success. He did the same in 2021 when he was forced to resign.
Though Derek Carr is a fine quarterback, he is not in the same stratosphere as Brady. It's easy to see a world where Brady leads Las Vegas to a Super Bowl instead of Tampa Bay. However, thanks to Gruden, the world will never know what could have been.
In a drastic turn of events, the Raiders could have enjoyed a completely different 2020 to the current day if Gruden did not nullify a sure-deal last minute.
Now, all that anyone is left with is the what-ifs.
