The Las Vegas Raiders will make some important decisions this offseason. They have already uncovered who will be the head coach and the staff surrounding Antonio Pierce. As soon as the Super Bowl finishes up, in which the Raiders are technically hosting the two teams, they will get right into free agency and NFL draft scenarios.
One of the more important parts of the offseason is deciding how the Raiders will use their $43 million in cap space, the 11th most in the league. One thing on the list is to try and bring back Josh Jacobs, one of the best running backs in the league, on a good deal for both sides.
Last season, Jacobs held out of training camp for some time and ended up getting a restructured one-year deal that benefited him. But, really, that just pushed the Raiders' problem back a year. Now, they have to decide what the long-term answer will be. As far as Jacobs, he wants to be in Vegas, but the money has to be right.
"I trust in God's plan," Jacobs told Vinny Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Journal. "Obviously, this is home for me. Regardless how it plays out, this is still somewhere I will forever keep a house and things like that. I will forever keep a home. Hopefully, we can get this ball rolling, make the playoffs, and go (further). And give the fans a lot of support.
"I trust the system and the guys that they're putting together. I know that the guys that they're gonna bring back and the guys that they're gonna bring in are going to be fully bought in. So it's going to be a fun season."
Jacobs led the league in rushing in 2022. Last year, he didn't have nearly the season he did before, but it definitely wasn't a bad year. Jacobs is a bell-cow type of back, where he will take a lot of the workload every game. He runs the ball a lot, which is another reason the Raiders are hesitant to give Jacobs a long-term deal. They don't want his body to wear down and still be paying him a ton of money.
Paying Jacobs a good bit of money isn't the issue. Jacobs wasn't financially secure for a long time, not just one or two years. That's understandable, but the Raiders will have to try to reach common ground on it. It's good to hear that Jacobs is in good spirits about it all, so far, that is.
