There’s one thing the Las Vegas Raiders need desperately when it comes to new head coach Klint Kubiak and his staff: Some continuity. There has been a different regime in town almost every season since the Raiders arrived in Vegas. That needs to change.

Vegas has already started some of that with the hiring of defensive coordinator Rob Leonard. This move not only keeps some stability and continuity, as Leonard was the defensive line coach last season, but it also makes Maxx Crosby happy. Now, they’ve retained another coach to bring even more continuity on that side of the ball.

The Las Vegas Raiders are retaining Joe Woods

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Raiders are retaining Joe Woods as their defensive pass-game coordinator, as new head coach Klint Kubiak is going with continuity. The Raiders need some of that, considering what they’ve had the last five years.

Woods is coming back in the same role, as the pass-game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Honestly, this isn’t a bad decision either, given what he brings outside of continuity. Woods got the most out of a secondary that was extremely bad last season. When your best player is Eric Stokes, who had a great season, then you have to be doing something right. They still didn’t have the personnel to be successful in that room as a whole.

With a ton of cap space and a ton of picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Raiders could put a completely different secondary on the field in 2026. Then we could see even more of what Wood is really about. He’s bringing 33 years of coaching experience, with 21 years of experience in the NFL, so he obviously knows what he’s doing. That means Kubiak is not only bringing some continuity back but also experience, as the coordinators and HC are all 38 and 37 years old.
