There’s a new fun hypothetical head coach candidate for the Raiders, and it makes a bit of sense
The Raiders cannot mess up another HC search.
When it comes to a head coach search, the Las Vegas Raiders haven’t gotten it right in over 20 years, considering that’s their last playoff win. They are now looking for an HC candidate who can rebuild this franchise and adapt to the new era of NFL football. The Raiders have done their due diligence so far, interviewing every possible candidate they have a chance with. Well, outside of former quarterback Derek Carr.
Yes, you read that right, Carr wants to be the head coach of the Silver and Black.
“I’m telling you right now. I know who (the next head coach) should be. I would love to be the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Carr said on his podcast with his brother, David Carr. “Can I get an interview?… My first move as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, (making David the) emergency quarterback. Dave’s getting in on a tush push because I want to see if his hip really will break… I’d love to do it. You don’t understand how much I love the Silver and Black. I don’t think I’m going to get a chance.”
Hiring Carr makes a bit of sense, but it’s not completely realistic
You can make the case that Antonio Pierce was the perfect head coach candidate for the Raiders. He bled Silver and Black, growing up a Raiders fan in Los Angeles. He also hates the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Los Angeles Chargers with a passion. His issue was that he didn’t have a good staff around him.
Making Carr the head coach isn’t really realistic in that he has zero coaching experience. Pierce didn’t have any head-coaching or coordinator experience. However, he was at least a linebackers coach. Carr has never coached anything other than maybe his kids’ sports teams. That doesn’t mean Carr can’t be a head coach, but given where this franchise is heading, they need someone they know can coach. They don’t know if Carr can.
However, it does make sense in the fact that he’s a very lovable guy. People would likely want to play for him, at least at the start of it all, until the team is bad. He knows football, offense, and defense, because he was a quarterback. He has had a million different offensive and defensive coordinators, along with position coaches, so he has the connections and can see what did and didn’t work.
Carr would do whatever it takes to get the Raiders back to the top, though. I’m not sure even Mark Davis himself would care as much as Carr would about what happens with the Raiders. So, it makes a bit of sense, and it’s fun, but it’s not realistic.
