Klint Kubiak has already conducted interviews and met with several defensive coordinator candidates, and now he’s adding another to the pool.

Raiders set to interview DeMarcus Covington

They’ve interviewed former Raiders DL coach Rob Leonard, Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant, and Seattle Seahawks safeties coach Jeff Howard. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Raiders are interviewing DeMarcus Covington, who served as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator in 2024, after previously working with their defensive line, and recently joined the Green Bay Packers as their defensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Covington just finished coaching Micah Parsons for a short time before Parsons tore his ACL. Parsons and Maxx Crosby are similar players, though not exactly the same. Both are polarizing edge rushers who move around and play both the pass and run. If Covington were to get hired, he would have experience coaching a player like Crosby, which is important.

Kubiak mentioned the kind of coaches he wants on his staff, and Covington fits that mold.

“We’re trying to assemble a great team of teachers,” Kubiak told reporters. “We’ve got to get some really good teachers and coaches here, and get us all on the same page, and get our players going in the same direction. That communication is really important. I think if we can put together a great staff here and get our players up to date on these playbooks and the expectations we have of them, then the results will speak for themselves.”

Covington spent 2017 to 2024 with the Patriots. Previously, he worked in the college ranks. Covington has 12 years of coaching experience but has never called plays. The defensive coordinator role is the more crucial position on Klint Kubiak’s staff, as that coach will call plays, whereas Kubiak will handle offensive play-calling. The Raiders continue to expand their list of candidates.
