Raiders just lost out on a prominent head coach candidate because they still don’t have what’s hurt them in these situations for years
The Raiders are going to find their head coach eventually.
The Las Vegas Raiders once again lost out to another team for a head coach candidate because they don’t have a quarterback, and an elite one at that. This has happened for years during these head coach searches, most notably last offseason, when Ben Johnson took the Chicago Bears job over Caleb Williams in Vegas.
Now it’s happened again.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Baltimore Ravens are hiring former Los Angeles Chargers DC Jesse Minter as their new head coach. Minter was previously with the Ravens from 2017 to 2020 as their DC, and now returns to take over John Harbaugh’s seat. Jesse Minter canceled his Cleveland Browns visit after meeting with the Ravens on Wednesday night. Schultz also reported that the Raiders had heavy interest in Minter and were in on him until the end. Schultz said Vegas made a very strong push to get Minter over the last 24 hours.
The Raiders still have an advantage over other prominent head coach candidates
Schultz recently reported that the two favorites for the Raiders head coaching job were Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Denver Broncos quarterback coach Davis Webb. However, Vegas has to wait for those two teams, both in the conference championship games, to lose so they can interview the candidates in person.
The Raiders want an offensive-minded head coach, and with them likely drafting quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the franchise quarterback, getting a head coach like that is probably the right idea. If they already had an established quarterback who was one of the best in the league, as the Ravens have in Lamar Jackson, it would be a different story.
Mendoza will need someone who provides consistency in the first few years of his career. If you get him and an offensive-minded head coach, you don’t have to worry about an offensive scheme change every time there’s a new OC, meaning you don’t have to worry about him learning a new scheme every offseason.
That has Mendoza, and any quarterback, ready earlier in the offseason than they would be if they had to learn a new system. So maybe it’s good that the Raiders missed on Minter.
