By this time next week, we should know who the Las Vegas Raiders’ next head coach is, though things can always change.

The Raiders are down to two candidates now in Seattle Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak and Denver Broncos QB coach Davis Webb. Before this week, Mike McDaniel, Brian Daboll, and Joe Brady were also candidates. However, Daboll is now the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, and Brady was promoted to head coach of the Buffalo Bills. McDaniel took the offensive coordinator job with the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Raiders are set to host one more interview this weekend with Seahawks OC Kubiak. After that, the Raiders should know who their next head coach will be. Fowler also reports that one candidate said, “It’s Kubiak’s job to lose,” indicating that Kubiak is currently the leading contender for the position.

Kubiak is also prepping for a Super Bowl, where his Seahawks are set to face the New England Patriots.

The Raiders have to get the head coach decision right

The good news about the Raiders’ decision on their head coach is that they are taking their time to get it right. They’ve done this head coach search thing every year for the last five years or so. This one has to be done the right way, because this is the head coach who, from what we have heard, will have more than a year to try to turn the franchise around.

The other good news is that the Raiders have two finalists who both come with notable strengths from successful seasons. Kubiak led one of the league’s top offenses this year and brings recent experience from coaching a Super Bowl-bound team. Webb, meanwhile, contributed to his team’s AFC Championship run and has gained insight as a quarterback coach working under Super Bowl-winning head coach Sean Payton.

There are some bad things to consider, too. Kubiak has really only had one great year as an OC, while Webb has never even been a coordinator. These are things that could come with some growing pains. However, the raiders feel strongly about the two of them.
