Raiders make a buzzer-beater-like move that not many saw coming based on what happened in 2025

The Las Vegas Raiders made a buzzer-beater move on Tuesday, just before the new league year begins.

The Raiders trade QB Geno Smith to the New York.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, both sides mutually agreed to part ways. The Raiders’ new coaching staff did not want Smith, and Smith, now 35, wanted a fresh start. This move was expected to be official at the beginning of the new league year on March 11, but now, the Raiders found a trade partner pretty much at the last second, or the day before.

Smith is being sent to the New York Jets with a seventh-round pick, and they’re getting a sixth-round pick in exchange. The Raiders, however, are expected to pay a chunk of his salary in this exchange. No one really expected this, especially considering what everyone saw regarding Smith on the field in 2025. He was terrible, but the team that drafted Smith years ago wanted him again.

Smith led the league in interceptions with 17 last season and, at times, was among the league’s worst quarterbacks. Still, not all the blame is his. The offensive system in place, as revealed by the players’ NFLPA report cards, was a disaster. Chip Kelly was voted with an F on the report cards, and the offensive line’s bad play in both areas also doesn’t help Smith. But, there is only one person on the field of the 11 throwing the ball—there is only one person throwing it to the other team. And, there was only one player consistently throwing others under the bus, insulting fans, and flipping fans off.

When the initial news of his being released came out, Smith took to Twitter and tweeted several things like:

“God is the GREATEST. THANK U LORD.”
“ALL PRAISE IS DUE TO THE MOST HIGH.”
“Let’s see what the next 6 years have to offer. God is REAL.”

It’s clear Smith wanted out. Now, both sides can continue on their own journey. The Raiders seem headed in a better direction now.
