When the news on Wednesday broke that Las Vegas Raiders Maxx Crosby was going to get an extension, no one was surprised. When the numbers of the contract extension were revealed, everyone was surprised, and not because Crosby didn't deserve it.
Let's start by saying no one embodies what it means to be a Raider more than Crosby does. All of the guys you likely grew up watching, wearing and repping the Silver and Black on the field, whether it was in Los Angeles or Oakland, are exactly the same way Crosby is. Gritty, nasty, relentless, determined, and one of the most fierce competitors out there.
And while he deserves it, no one expected him to end up being the highest paid player in NFL history, that's not a quarterback. We all expected him to get a pretty big bag, but that's not what I or anyone expected. And yet, he may still deserve more than that.
What Crosby brings to a franchise is more than what you see on the field. That alone is enough, as he's one of the best players in the entire NFL despite always playing banged up, playing every single snap, and being gameplanned against. But he's also a culture and lockerroom guy, and a player that you can build around. Crosby stands for something off of the field, too. He's big into charity events, specifically supporting people who have struggled with and currently struggle with addiction, as next week marks his five year anniversary of being sober.
So, making NFL history, it's only right it's Crosby. But, it won't stay that way for long.
Raiders, Crosby make NFL history, but not for long
As stated earlier, Crosby and the Raiders made history making him the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. However, that will change soon.
There are several players lined up to get bigger pay days that are very soon. Guys like Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons, or even Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, who will likely get that deal from a new team.
All three of these guys could easily get more money than what Crosby got, which isn't a bad thing at all. It's just that when these types of contracts happen, history is always being made, almost every time a star player gets a new deal.
