Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs is officially the last man standing in what has become a tough scene for NFL running backs.
That's because the New York Giants and two-time Pro Bowl RB Saquon Barkley agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million on Tuesday morning, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The agreement now leaves Jacobs as the lone RB without a deal entering training camp.
The key with Barkley's deal, and even Austin Ekeler's, is the fact that incentives are involved. Neither player really got the pay bump they were looking for – they're going to have to go out and prove their worth, yet again, in 2023.
That trend, right there, is a catalyst behind the (safe) assumption that Jacobs and the Raiders won't come to an agreement, on anything, anytime soon. The 2022 rushing champ has been the most vocal about his situation and even gave the team an ultimatum back in February. It's clear that in his mind, the team didn't do enough during the offseason and wants him to be "the hero"; therefore, he wants to be paid as such.
And, as we all know, actions speak louder than words: Jacobs was recently seen on a flight departing Las Vegas and per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, he won't be coming back at any point in the near future.
It's completely up-in-the-air when it comes to figuring out how this situation ultimately ends. But for now, there's no end in sight unless Jacobs, like Barkley caves.
Why the Raiders’ recent addition was a splash move
The Las Vegas Raiders just made a move that could really help them in 2023.
