Pete Carroll is actually in much higher spirits after losing to the Denver Broncos than you would think he’d be
Pete Carroll is happy with what the Raiders showed vs. the Broncos.
The Las Vegas Raiders did not put on a show on primetime TV. They say the Thursday Night Football games are usually bad games, or bad teams, getting their one National TV game, and that was pretty much the case with Vegas and the Denver Broncos. This game was hard to watch, on both sides of the ball, for both teams.
However, the Raiders ended this game with a chance to win, again, after having a chance against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. That has to be why head coach Pete Carroll was so elated after the game and genuinely pleased with what he saw.
Pete Carroll is happy with what he saw in the loss to the Broncos
“I’m so fired up about the way we played in general,” Carroll told reporters after the 10-7 loss on the road. “To fight against these guys all night long, and then to have a chance to tie it up, and what would have happened there? I don’t know, I think we would win. There’s a lot of in-between things to talk about.
“But the way that they competed is just what we’re hoping for, just what we’re looking for. Could we not clip a guy? Could we not hold a guy? Yeah. There are so many things we could get better at. But the fight is in this dog now. But I couldn’t wait to tell them how proud I was. We are going to do something.”
The Raiders did start the game extremely well and actually struck first in terms of points. They scored first on the back of Ashton Jeanty. Then, their defense held the Broncos to four straight three-and-outs to start the game. The only issue is that they couldn’t capitalize on those short possessions by the Broncos, as they ended up punting shortly after, too.
On offense, they started the game moving the ball well. Geno Smith looked fine; he targeted open guys, but penalties kept them from scoring a few times, and then kept them from having big chunk plays that were eventually called back. The offensive line blocked well when the starting unit was in, and actually won the line of scrimmage battle to start the game. However, injuries seemed to completely derail the entire offense, while the defense still did its thing.
So, after Carroll has now realized that they have a long way to go in terms of being a good football team, he sees this as an improvement. The Raiders have lost three straight games after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, and now the Broncos. They will play the Dallas Cowboys next week.
